The accumulation of sand in production separators is a common problem. The TORE® Online Vessel Desander (TORE®OVD) provides a best in class solution by removing sand from separator vessels and tanks on-line, eliminating the need for production disturbance and costly shut downs. Only TORE® keeps separators free from sand, enabling them to operate continuously at design efficiency, maximising production revenues.
How it works
TORE®OVD is a unique, proven technology that works by feeding or pumping liquid into the TORE® which is then induced to swirl, then exit to create a controlled vortex directly below the TORE® discharge tube. The unique action of the TORE® fluidises and lifts the sand in a swirling, spiralling motion before discharging it through pipework out of the separator.
Crucially, this fluidisation of the solids doesn’t disturb the interface between the oil and water, so there’s no disturbance of well stream fluids.
Because it’s an on-line solution, the TORE®OVD can be operated as often as wished without affecting production. Some operators activate it on a daily basis with one operator removing up to 10 tonnes of sand per week from one separator.
Easy to install and operate
The TORE®OVD can be installed in any new build vessel or as a retrofit solution, using existing internal brackets and vessel nozzles. Simple to operate, it allows the controlled and efficient removal of solids and is maintained without the need for specialist contractors.
The TORE®OVD has no moving parts, operates effectively when partially or fully covered by the accumulated sand and provides a life of field solution.

Proven track record
The TORE®OVD has been successfully deployed in a variety of separation degassers, coalescers, slug catchers and other vessels. Today, there are well over 100 installations worldwide, with clients including BP, Apache, Statoil, Petronas, Maersk, A.I.O.C, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Kerr McGee, CNR and Mobil.
The TORE®OVD belongs to Merpro’s range of patented sand management products. It can be used in conjunction with other TORE® products and services, including TORE®SCRUB for sand/solids cleaning and TORE®HYDROHOIST for solids transportation and lifting to provide a complete process solution.
